This is a topic that stinks, and nobody wants to talk about it… The “shitter was full,” and now you’ve emptied and cleaned it out, but you have that odor coming from your camper bathroom. You’ve tried everything, went to your local RV dealership, Walmart, etc., and purchased Aqua Chem or other brands of toilet treatment. Still, it doesn’t work, and you still have to plug your nose to go into the bathroom to do your business.
I have the solution, and it works. It’s two simple ingredients that you can purchase at Walmart – Calgon Water Softener and Original Dawn Dish Soap.
- Step 1: Empty your black tank.
- Step 2: Open your Calgon Water Softener and use the lid cover to pour one cup of the softener into your black tank.
- Step 3: Use the same lid cover, fill it with your Original Dawn Dish Soap, and pour it into your black tank.
- Step 4: Now, you can fill up the tank by flushing the toilet or just grab a bucket and dump 3 gallons of water into the black tank.
I actually let this set in the camper for a week before heading out; it was a great way to have a starting base for the black tank, and the smell disappeared. I don’t do this every time, but it wouldn’t hurt. Just remember, water is your friend. Starting with plenty of water in the tank will help eliminate the smell in the long run.
